Firewalls protect a local network or sub-network from the outside global network. Virtual firewalls are application based programs that are built into an operating system. The security provided is better for personal computers or small businesses. These applications provide mobility making them a convenient option for organizations that work outside of a network. Hardware firewalls are actual physical appliances that provide a barrier and greater security. These appliances are expensive and complicated making them an appropriate option for larger companies. Virtual and hardware firewalls have many advantages as well as disadvantages, but the question should not be which is better. The question should be which better fits the criteria and the needs of the user.
