Midrange Computers

Midrange computers are in between mainframes and microcomputers. Midrange computers are said to be more powerful than personal computer, but less capable than mainframe computers. In the 1960s midrange computers were also called minicomputers (Rouse, 2005). Throughout its existence, midrange computers have been predominantly used for science, research and small to medium-sized businesses. In the 1990s the client-server model became popular. Consequently, midrange computers and other similar computers were being known as servers (small to medium-sized), because theu usally “serve” end users at their “client” computers (Midrange Servers, n.d.).
