INFO300 Hands On Linux Project • 11:00 Section:
The progress report and compliance with specs are updated at one second past every minute. They were last updated 2018-12-07 14:48:01.
Logs for bash and sftp history are updated every ten minutes.
A good looking progress report will have no red marks for components on their due date.
Due dates and other specs are posted on the class’ web page. The lack of red marks does not
necessariy mean that all specs for the project have been met.
See Notes about Names and Permissions for Parts 1, 2, & 3
after the Progress Report…
This is an exercise for working at the command line on a Linux
server and using the vi editor.
Do not edit these files on a Windows or Mac desktop and copy them to
the server.

Physical GPS 1. Introduction: With the world at the fingertips of the internet user, people can track themselves and others with ease. Whether or not that is a positive or negative thing, it is worth looking into. There are built-in global positioning systems (GPS), but the first type of GPS's were standalone. a. Thesis Statement: While the physical GPS is incredibly useful in the real world is it still preferable to the built-in GPS, does it have adequate market share, and does the future of the GPS look as bright as everyone claims? 2. Body Paragraph 1: Incredibly Useful a. What does GPS stand for? "GPS is a system. It's made up of three parts: satellites, ground stations, and receivers." b. What sort of things have GPS? Pretty much everything nowadays! Weather tracking equipment, phones, watches, cars, NASA, and most things in between c. What is the difference between physical and built-in GPS? Physical GPS does more than built-in Connected GPS - being used for Fitbit's and such wearable technology. The GPS is piggybacking off of the phone and therefore can't be on its own. 3. Body Paragraph 2: Does it have adequate market share? a. Is built-in GPS preferable to physical? For convenience, yes You can just tell your phone, "Ok Google, take me home,"and Google Maps will navigate you home. Similar features are on a built-in device, but you may have to look for your Garmin or have to press a bunch of buttons to get to the "take me home" screen. We always have our phones on us, so it is more convenient. b. Who are the major physical GPS owners? The major player in the standalone market is Garmin, based right out of Kansas. They have 98.54% of the total segment market share in Q3 of 2018. 4. Body Paragraph 3: GPS and Privacy Concerns a. Laws prohibiting the use of GPS as a "tracking tool" The Geolocation Privacy and Surveillance Act b. Using GPS for solving criminal investigations c. Is it less ethical for built-in than standalone? Since we have the built-in's with us at every moment and we don't have the standalone's everywhere we go, is it more ethical to "keep track" of the standalone vs. built-in? 5. Body Paragraph 4: The future of physical GPS a. Future of GPS "Further, I can use the "look around" feature in my GPS package, I can tell what streets and businesses I am passing by. I can even look up a specific business address and phone number." b. Is physical GPS dying? While it is becoming less and less common, there will come a point of diminishing return on our smartphones. 6. Conclusion: a. One last comparrison of physical and standalone b. wrapping up the future of GPS, whether it is standalone or otherwise. References: Connected GPS - definition. (n.d.). VR Machines: Comparing Price vs. Functionality. 1.Virtual reality is a relatively new piece of technology a.Computers provide the illusion of a being in a new place or reality. b.Gets rid of the tactile function of a physical keyboard c.Different from augmented reality, but all under the same term XR or extended reality 2.Mobile Headsets a.Use smartphones for displays b.Shell with lenses c.Small in size and cheap, light 3.Tethered Headsets a.Combined displays and connect to computers or console using cable b.Usually large, expensive, resource-intensive c.Motion-sensing and head-tracking hardware, outside cameras, bodily controls 4.Low to Moderately Priced: Mobile Headsets a.Google Cardboard i.Specs: N/A, N/A ii.Cost: $15 iii.Platform: Any Phone iv.What it can do: It’s a piece of cardboard that comes with an app that does VR. v.Is it worth it? For $15 it’s actually not bad. It has a lot of support with apps and games. You could also just DIY it, but if you try it and like it, why not support the company. b.Samsung Gear VR i.Specs: N/A, N/a ii.Cost: $130 iii.Platform: Latest Samsung Phones iv.What it can do: Slide your Galaxy or Note phone in and play games with one controller, you can also watch videos and connect to the internet v.Is it worth it? On paper this isn’t a bad chance for someone wanting to get into VR. As an owner of one of these, I would not recommend. There are not a lot of apps, you need the latest Samsung phone, and the controls are wonky. It’s ok as a VR device, but they need to get their community to build more apps for this. c.Oculus Go i.Specs: 2560 x 1440, 60hz refresh rate ii.Cost: $199 iii.Platform: Standalone with companion app iv.What it can do: Controller, Can wear with glasses, untethered, spatial audio, lots of apps and games v.Is it worth it? Oculus go is a pretty good midtier headset, with good viewing. The downside is it’s tracking, it only tracks in 3 directions which is worse than most of the others in this list. Overall, a good starting headset for someone who wants to get into VR. d.Lenovo Mirage Solo i.Specs: 2560 x 1440 resolution, N/A ii.Cost: $399 iii.Platform: Standalone iv.What it can do: Untethered, smartphone free, v.Is it worth it? While the technology (WorldSense) is pretty amazing for an untethered (usually lower power and graphics), there doesn’t seem to be a lot of support for this. In addition, it seems to be more geared towards picture taking. If you wanted to develop for Lenovo, this is probably your best shot. 5.Highly Priced: Tethered a.Oculus Rift i.Specs: 2160x1200 resolution, 90Hz refresh Rate ii.Cost: $399 iii.Platform: PC iv.What it can do: Integrated Audio, controllers that are motion tracked by cameras, high graphical quality, room scale v.Is it worth it? With high compatibility with Steam and Facebook you’ll never run out of things to do. Which is good for that price tag. You’ll also need a fairly high-power graphics card (GTX 1050Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470 +). Recommended for the serious gamer who builds their own computer or has a high-quality gaming laptop. b.HTC Vive i.Specs: 2160x1200 resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate ii.Cost: $499 iii.Platform: PC iv.What it can do: Sensors with room tracking, controllers, v.Is it worth it? This moderately priced VR headset is pretty good considering that the newer Vive Pro is starting to replace it. It has a lot of support, especially from Steam. The biggest barrier to owning one of these is the ability to actually run it on your computer without owning an $800 graphics card (thanks bitcoin). Overall, this is for the computer enthusiast without breaking the bank too much. c.HTC Vive Pro i.Specs: 2880 x 1600 resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate ii.Cost: $799 iii.Platform: PC iv.What it can do: Lighthouse room tracking- able to move around with a headset, controllers, ability to move around a room quickly, lots of support and games v.Is it worth it? This is a beast of VR headset, the current best of all listed, with amazing graphics, support, and a heck of a price tag. The $800 dollar price tag, plus the required computer specs means that this headset is for the computer enthusiast with a lot of expendable cash. VR also has a lot of research going on, so it could flawlessly run your simulations without a lot of latency. d.Sony Playstation VR i.Specs: 1920 x 1080 resolution, 120hz refresh rate ii.Cost: $249 iii.Platform: PS4 iv.What it can do: Plugs straight into your PS4, Sony support with tons of games, controllers, you can sit and play v.Is it worth it? If you already have a PS4 it’s as easy as plug and play. Sony also has a lot of support for this headset, and there’s a surprising amount of titles to play from your PS4. A downside is the resolution, not as great as the competitions. However, the low cost makes it a great gift to someone who already has a PS4, or as a combo gift with a PS4 ($300) which is still less than the top quality Vive Pro. Brown, L. (2017, December 24). Permissions and other Specs
Part 1 — Learn vi and Post your Topic
Before making Outlines and web directories, find a vim tutorial you like and get comfortable
using it.
Then, use vi to edit files in your home directory named File1, File2, and File3, each with at least
three well-formatted paragraphs from a text, novel, article or your own poetry, prose, or blog.
Make each line of text a max of 75 characters wide.
Set the permissions for each of these files to 600, readable by only yourself
and root.
Make a directory named Outlines in your home directory and
edit the topic for your brief on the 1st line of a file named Brief1 in the Outlines directory.
Nothing else is required in the file for Part 1 but line 2 should be left empty if there is.
The file should be ‘plain text’, with no HTML.
Set the permissions on the Outlines directory to 700 and the file Brief1 to 600.
Check the progress page to make sure Outlines and Brief1 are in the right place with the right permissions.
The progress page is updated one second past every minute. Enter ‘date’ at the command line
to check the time.
Part 2 — Posting Your Outline and References
Part 2 of the project is to find references for your brief,
organize them, make an outline for the brief, and use vi to key the outline and references into the file Brief1.
Brief1 should be a plain-text file, should not have any html, will only be read
by you and the instructor. It should be organized by indenting to show the ‘levels of the outline’.
When you’ve completed the research, edit the file Brief1 and add
a nicely indented outline for your tech market brief, starting in line 3, leaving the 2nd line empty.
Single-space between each entry in the outline, leaving no ‘blank line’ between the lines of your outline.
Use spaces to make indentations to structure the outline.
After the single-spaced outline, double-space to leave an empty line and list your references.
If you have done this properly, your feedback below will show your topic,
the first entry in your outline, and the first reference in your list.
Part 3 — Making the 3-page website:
Please find and comply with all the specs posted on the class’ page and mentioned in class for the HOL/Tech Brief project.
Make a valid skeleton of your website first, then pitch your brief in standards-compliant html and css.
Please complete these little tasks at the linux command line without desktop editors!
Steps, without FileZilla or WinSCP, at the command line:
- Make a directory named ‘web’, all lower case, with no apostrophes, in your home directory
if you haven’t already done it.
Set it’s permissions to rwx—–x so you have full access to it and httpd can include it in a path. - Use vi to create and edit index.html in your web directory. Verify that it shows up
as index.html in your progress report below. - Use vi to edit a file named Brief1.html in your web directory.
Your Brief1.html will hold the web version of your technical market brief. - Set the permissions of any web pages, css, graphics,
or other files in the web directory to 604 rw—-r–.
If there are subdirectories, set them to rwx—r-x.
Grading:
Get any questions answered in class, not in email.
Snapshots of this page, the contents of your home directory, and your history at the command line will be
taken after the deadline and used to score the timeliness and quality of each component at the time it was due.
