The Competition Between SSDs and HDDs
Solid State Drives and Hard Disk Drives are two primary sources of secondary data storage for computer systems. Until the last decade, Hard Disk Drives were the dominant market force in secondary storage. Now it is widely believed that Solid State Drives, who in the last few years have emerged as major compeitor on the world stage, will eclipse Hard Disk Drives as the primary source of secondary storage for computer systems.
But just how accurate is this and what does this mean for Hard Disk Drives as a secondary storage method? It is clear that Solid State Drives have seen a dramatic increase in units sold across the globe. Will HDDs be eclipsed and if so, when is it predicted to happen? Will they eventually become obsolete technology in the distant future?
