Semantic Markup

What is it?

Semantic markup is defined as: "The use of HTML markup to semantics or meaning or the infomation on webpages and web applications rather than merely to define its presentation or look. Sematic HTML is processed by traditional web browsers as well as many other user agents". In layman terms Sematic markup is the stucture behind the content and styles on a webpage. Without semantic markup pages are not easily searchable, and do not follow the proper structuring.

Speaking on searchability, sematic markup is a key element in search engines. Search engines use the semantic markup to figure out what type of site is being searched, the area it should be located and various other details regarding the page. It causes hiccups in the way searches are supposed to work when semantic markup is ignored.

A web page can only be considered truly accessible if it is properly designed to work for all people regardless of the hardware, software language or skill level.

In the summer of 1998 there was an admendment made to the Workforce Rehabilitation act of 1973. From that day on it was stated in law that any electronic and online information that was related to government use had to be accessible to people with disabilities. This law required government agencies to tweak their electronic information already in place baring it causes a large or undue strain on the agency or organization
