Semantics, Accessibility, & Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Semantic Markup

According to, "Semantic Markup is a way of writing and structuring your HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) so that it reinforces the semantics, or meaning, of the context rather than its apperance." The HTML tags are important due to their role in communicating the element's content to the browser. Simply put, the more accurate your semantic markup, the easier your page will be to read. Not only should a website be readbl by users, but by computers as well. The easier it is for a computer to scan the contents of your website, the higher the likelihood of your website's reach and accessibility. Overall, this helps to ehance your SEO positioning.

Section 508-Accessibility

Sectiion 508 is a section included in The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, also known as Rehab Act.This amendment is to help ensure equality amongst those with disabilities when it comes to information technology. The United States Enviornmental Protection Agency goes in depth to say," Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C ยง 794d), as amended by the Worforce Investment Act of1998 (P.L. 105-220) requires federal agencies to develop, procure, maintain and use information and communications technology (ICT) that is accessible to people with disabilities - regardless ofwhether or not they work for the federal government.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is important when it comes to the amount of traffic that your website is generating. Website traffic can be generated through either organic searches, or paid advertisements. An organic search is an unpaid result that is shown due to its relevancy. In order to get Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), search engines must crawl through different web pages analyzing the content to see if the site is good enough to add to its index. An item is not able to be found through a serach engine until it is indexed. What qualifies a website to be added to the index is dependant upon search engines.

What's the relation?

As mentioned earlier, semantic markup is crucial to a website. The reason for this importance is because it can have an impact on accessibility. Due to its impact on the framework, failure to properly markup your website takes away the user's and computer's ability to comprhend the content. In turn, this will negatively impact the amount of traffc your website is generating. In the long run, this will make it less likely for the indexing of your website to take place.
