Overview

Social Media plays a huge role in people's everyday lives. It can positively and negatively affect society. This website talks about the history of Social Media. It also talks about the benefits and risks it poses for today's world.

Technical Brief

Social Media has become very prominent in today's world. Social Media gives people the opportunity to connect through the internet. Social Media has connected us with all our acquaintances and friends, but has made us out of touch with the real world. Now a day's social media has become a part of everyone's daily routine. People wake up and the first thing they do is check their social media accounts. Then they continuously check their accounts throughout the day. It is becoming more and more difficult to have a normal conversation with someone, because the person is more interested in what is going on in their social media account as opposed to the real world. So, does social media negatively or positively impact our society? In my opinion it has both a positive and negative impact on today's world. It gives people the opportunity to communicate with old friends and acquaintances with just a click of a button. But, many people fear that it is making the real world seem irrelevant and too many people are focused on what is happening on their phone rather than what is going on in front of them.

So, let's first talk about the history of social media. Social media has existed much longer than people think. Many people believe social media originated when Myspace was born, but it actually originated a lot earlier than that. According to the research article "The History of Social Media and its Impact on Business", the earliest occurrence of social media was in 1792 through the telegraph, where it allowed people to communicate over long distances. Social Media begun then and started to evolve into the social media we see on the internet. In the 1960's, email was created. This allowed people to send each other messages from one computer to another. Back then, both computers had to be online to email. In the 1970's, Multi-User Domain was created. It was "a real-time virtual world with role-playing games, interactive fiction, and online chat." (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.2). In 1978, BBS was created which stands for bulletin board system. This allowed "users to log in to the system to upload and download software, read news, or exchange messages with others." (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.2). This system was accessed using a "modem through a telephone line by one person at a time." (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.2). These bulletin board systems "were the predecessors of the World Wide Web." ((Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.2). In the 1980's IRC was created. It stands for Internet Relay Chat, and was "designed for group communication" (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.3). It was a way for groups of people to message each other in real-time. In the 1990's social networking sites were starting to blossom. By the 2000's social media was becoming very popular. Websites like Myspace and Facebook were created.

MySpace was one of the first social networking sites to exist. It allowed "users to customize their profile information to give detailed information about themselves and what they are interested in." (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.4). Facebook was then created. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg when he was attending Harvard. The website was only for Harvard students at first, but then was allowed for anyone above the age of 13. "In January 2009, Facebook was ranked as the most used social network worldwide." (Edosomwan,Prakasan,Kouame,Watson,Seymour pg.4). Then social media like YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat followed. These social medias changed the world that we live in today.

Facebook dominates the market shares of social media websites. The market share percent of social media sites worldwide in 2011 through 2012 showed that Facebook reigned through. It came in with a percentage of 64.27. This percentage compared to other sites like YouTube and Twitter was exponentially greater. Twitter only came in with a market share percentage of 5.07, which does not even compare to Facebook. Currently YouTube has gained some platform in the market. Their market share has increased to 24.3%. Facebook continues to dominate the market, because it owns other popular social media sites like Instagram and WhatsApp. Until something better is created, I believe Facebook will continue to dominate the market.

What are some positive changes social media has brought to our world? Social media gives people the opportunity of "staying connected with friends and family, making new friends, sharing pictures, and exchanging ideas."(O'Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson pg.2). Everyone must be thankful for the fact that social media has made it easier for people to communicate with each other. A lot of people have friends and family all over the world. The fact that social media makes it so simple for us to stay in contact with each other is a huge deal. With social media like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat people have the ability to see what their friends and family are doing at any time of the day. Social media also "offers deeper benefits that extend into their view of self, community, and the world." (O'Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson pg.2). It gives people the ability to raise money for charities, share creative thoughts, and broaden their connections with people who share the same interests as them but come from different backgrounds. It has also helped students to do better in school. "Facebook and similar social media programs allow students to gather outside of class to collaborate and exchange ideas about assignments." (O'Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson pg.2). So, social media does provide some really great benefits to our world. Without social media, it would be much harder for people to stay in constant contact with each other. It allows us to be able to check up on friends and family every day, and allows us to make new friends very easily. It is great that something so simple can bring people from all around the world together.

Although, social media has its benefits it also has its risks. It can sometimes be taken too far. A lot of younger people these days are more interested in what is happening on their social media accounts rather than what is going on right in front of them. So, what are some risks that come with using social media? Well one thing that has been found is that people can experience Facebook Depression. It is "defined as depression that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites such as Facebook, and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression." (O'Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson pg.3). The fact that something as simple as a website can cause people to feel depressed is a huge deal. People are taking social media too seriously. They think that it somehow defines who they are as a person. If someone does not receive "likes" on a picture they posted on Facebook they start to feel upset and feel like their self-worth is based on the amount of "likes" they get on a picture or post. Another risk social media poses is that there is no more privacy in this world. People are constantly posting and "tweeting" about what is going on in their lives. There is nothing hidden anymore. If you want to find anything out about someone it is very simple to just go on their social media account and find it. A lot of jobs do this when looking to hire someone. It can really work against you, if you post the wrong things. Social media has brought a lot of negativity to the world. Something that was meant to bring people together has also been causing people to drift apart. A lot of people have started posting their political views on their social media accounts, and it has been angering people that do not have the same views. People put their daily lives up on social media, allowing everyone to know what they are up to. Now when you go to a public place all you see are people with their phones up taking "selfies" and snapchats instead of focusing on what is going on in front of them. People are basically seeing the world through their phones, and that is not okay.

In conclusion, does social media negatively affect our society or positively affect it? In my opinion social media is essential to our world. Without it, it would be much more difficult to know what is going on in the world, and to stay in touch with friends and family across the world. But, when used excessively it can start to become a problem. A lot of protests have occurred due to social media websites like Facebook. It sometimes causes people to commit suicide over cyber bullying on their social media accounts. What can we do to solve these problems? For one we can educate people on what to post on social media and what not to post. People can also limit posting their political views on their social media accounts to cause less disputes. People can also limit their use of social media to twice a day rather than checking it every hour of the day. If people obsessed over it less, it would not have such a large impact on people’s everyday lives. A healthy use of social media accounts can bring happiness, but over using it can bring depression. If people started focusing more on their lives rather than what other people are doing, the world would be a much better place. It is almost as if social media has become the real world, and people are living through it. If people were to put down their phones just occasionally it would make a huge difference. Once people start realizing that the real world is more important than their social media accounts, social media can be considered a good thing to have in the world.

Semantic Markup

The word semantic means to correctly interpret the meaning of a word or phrase. HTML uses semantic markup for the information that is contained in the opening and closing tags of a code. To use semantic markup when coding in HTML there are a couple of things that must be done. You must make sure you are using the HTML tags the right way so that the website comes out the way you want it to. Another thing you must do is separate content and presentation. Now when selecting HTML elements, you must consider their semantic meaning rather than thinking about the visual presentation. So, Sematic markup uses a coding language like HTML to define elements in a document. The use of sematic markup is very important, because it helps a website look better and makes it easier to use. You can write semantic markup using HTML tags like header or footer. All in all, semantic markup is necessary for websites to not only look good, but to be easier for users to access. Search Engine Optimization is a way to organize one's website, so that the website will be more relevant when a person is utilizing a search engine. Accessibility is used for websites to ensure that it can be used by anyone. There are a lot of rules that go into making a website accessible. For one the website must have a clean design so that is easy to be understood. If all of this is followed your website will come out looking nice and easy to use.
