What exactly is tape storage and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Tape is a type of storage that has been around for a very long period of time. Before we get into the pros and cons of tape drive here is a brief descrition about what a tape drive actually is. A tape drive is a type of drive that stores data. Many companies and businesess have used tape over the years however, its use is declining due to popular alternatives. The main and most popular alternatives to tape are HDD, SSD, Flash drives and cloud storage. These offer a lot of benefits that tape does not. There are advantages and disadvantages with each of these alternatives as well. These alternatives to tape are discussed in more detail within the technical brief.

Below, there are two lists presenting the pros and the cons of tape storage.

Pros:

  1. Tape storage is very durable.
  2. Tape storage typicalls has a very high storage capcity.
  3. Tape storage is usually immune to physical or electronic damage.

Cons:

  1. Slow access speeds. It is almost impossible for tape to allow random access to data.
  2. There is limited scalability with tape storage.
  3. The cost of alternatives are usually less expensive and offer more space than what you would be paying for tape.
  4. The storage space on tape is less than that of some other alternatives.
