Social media has peaked and usage is essentially unchanged over the past four years. Social media usage isn’t growing among young people. Usage patterns are starting to even out between young and middle-aged people. Women dominate social media usage—6 out of 10 Facebook and Instagram users are women. Instagram and WhatsApp are preferred by Hispanics and African-Americans. Facebook’s popularity in 2019 is just slightly greater than it was in 2013. By 2020, Twitter will be just the seventh or eighth-largest social network. African-Americans have largely abandoned Twitter.
